Painted Toes

Here are some tips to keep your feet healthy whether you are getting a pedicure or doing your nails at home. Please note: if you have Diabetes or poor circulation, talk to your podiatrist for recommendations before going to the salon for a pedicure. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me!

  • Don’t cut your cuticles! Cuticles are a protective barrier against bacteria, avoid cutting or pushing them back. Less cuticle means more risk of infection.
  • Don't use any sharp tools to clean under nails! Using anything sharp makes it easy to puncture the skin, leaving it vulnerable to infection.
  • No Razors! Don’t use or allow anyone to use a foot razor to remove dead skin. A razor can easily cause infection if too much skin is removed.
  • Don’t Round! Don't deeply round the edges of your toenails. This type of shape predisposes one to ingrown nails.
  • Don’t Share! Emery boards are porous and can trap germs that spread. Bring your own to the salon, unless you are sure that the salon replaces them with each customer.
  • Don’t forget to dry between your toes! Any moisture left in the interspace can lead to an open wound, fungal infection or soft tissue infection.
  • Don’t shave!  Freshly shaven legs or small cuts on your legs may allow bacteria to enter especially when you soak in warm water.
  • Stop Hiding! Don’t keep covering up discolored and thick nails with nail polish. You could be hiding a fungal infection. Most nail polish doesn’t allow the nail to breathe. Consult your podiatrist before you paint on another layer!
