Heel pain is a common problem among children. If you have noticed your child limping or walking on their toes to avoid pressure on their heels, you should make an appointment with a podiatrist. Common causes of heel pain in children are growth plate injuries, fractures, Achilles tendonitis and bursitis. However, the most common reason that children have heel pain is a condition known as calcaneal apophysitis. This is an inflammation of the growth plate caused by a muscle strain or overuse. We will X-ray your child’s foot to make sure the growth plate is not fractured. We will also perform a biomechanical exam to determine their foot structure. Based on our findings, we’ll begin treatment right away with heel cups, rest, stretching, icing and possibly physical therapy and custom orthotics. These injuries can be recurrent, especially in growing children, so make sure to see your podiatrist often.
