Do you have itchy, scaly feet? Athlete’s foot fungus is amazingly common at this time of the year. It’s a fungal infection that causes peeling, redness, itching and burning as well as blisters and sores. It is a contagious infection that can be passed by direct contact or by walking in places that have damp floors like locker rooms or swimming pools.

The fungus loves to grow in your stinky shoes, and especially in between your toes when they are sweaty. The good thing is that the fungus is usually treated with topical antifungal lotions and creams; and sometimes requires an oral antifungal in really nasty cases.

The part that people forget is that they need to decontaminate their shoes and change their socks on a regular basis (sometimes several times a day in hot, humid weather). Remind your children to wear flip-flops in locker rooms and on the pool deck. And most of all: stop scratching! It spreads the fungus and can even infect your toenail and fingernails!

If you have chronic athlete’s foot fungus and have tried over-the-counter creams without good results, request an appointment with us! Many of the fungal infections have grown resistant to the over-the-counter creams and a prescription strength is needed to get rid of the creeping crud!
